Tile Floor Installation Guide

Step 1: Prepare the RoomÂ
Before you start the installation process, you’ll need to remove any furniture and household items to create a working space. Next, you’ll need to take out the old carpet and padding. Here’s how to tackle this first part of the project:
- Cut the carpet into strips: Use a utility knife to cut the carpet into 3-4 foot strips. Be careful not to cut into the subfloor beneath the carpet.Â
- Roll up the carpet: Starting at one end of the room, roll up each strip of carpet and secure it with duct tape.
- Remove the tack strips: Use a pry bar and hammer to remove the tack strips around the perimeter of the room, ensuring not to damage the subfloor.
- Remove the carpet padding: Pull up the carpet padding and discard in accordance with your local area’s recycling and removal policies.
Step 2: Inspect the SubfloorÂ
Once you’ve removed the carpet and padding, you’ll need to inspect the subfloor. The subfloor also needs to be clean, level, dry, and free of any debris. If there are any cracks or holes, you’ll need to fill them with a self-leveling compound.Â
Step 3: Measure the RoomÂ
Before you start laying down tiles, you’ll need to measure the room to determine how many tiles you’ll need to purchase. Measure the length and width of the room in feet. Next, multiply the length by the width to find the square footage of the room.Â
For instance, if a bathroom measures 12 feet by 20 feet, then its total square footage is 240 (12 x 20 = 240).Â
Step 4: Lay Down the TilesÂ
Now it’s time to lay down the tiles.Â
- Start by finding the center of the room and marking it.Â
- Next, create a grid pattern using chalk lines to help you keep the tiles straight and even.Â
- Use a trowel to apply the adhesive to the subfloor and then lay down the tiles one by one.Â
- Make sure to leave a small gap between each tile for grout.Â

Step 5: Grout the TilesÂ
Once the tiles are laid down, you’ll need to let them set for a day or two. Afterward, you can start grouting. Mix the grout according to the instructions and use a grout float to apply it between the tiles. After applying the grout, wipe away any excess with a damp sponge.Â
